Taking care of a back pain affected person

Taking care of a person who is affected by back pain is a very tricky job. It is not easy to see someone in pain and the major hurdle is once you see someone in such a critical condition you are helpless, as you don’t know what to do. Most people with pain in the back have often said that it is better to have someone who can help them get over the pain.
In this article, I will discuss how you can help your family members, friends, or colleagues regain body fitness and get over the pain that is keeping them crippled.

The first thing you need to do is rearrange the whole house to make them comfy.

It is tough to find out if bending, stretching and lifting are causing any problems to the patients. So it is necessary to make sure that the patients are not giving extra efforts to move around or to reach for certain things. Most of the people suffering from this ailment always prefer to remain at home rather than spend weeks or even months at a rehabilitation center. So, it is essential to move around certain things in the house that they will need on a daily basis. Here are a few tips in order to achieve this.

  • Keep the things that the person needs on a daily basis at a chest height. It is important to keep everything at that height. It is very easy to forget to do that to a few items, so it is advisable to note the things you need to move. Mostly the kitchen items are already at chest height like the coffee pot or the coffee maker, but also remember to do the same for the items in the toilet like the hand towel, hand wash or the shampoo.
  • The chair the person uses must be adjustable. This will go a long way in keeping the person comfortable. If the chair or couch is not adjustable, try to put some cushions or use a pillow at the back. This also helps the patient to maintain a good posture while sitting down.
  • Try to make the patient avoid stairs. It is very important to eliminate the use of stairs as most of the patients complain while using them. So, if possible try to transfer the bedroom or the office from the second floor to the ground floor. This will save them a lot of energy.

It is important to know that regular exercise and movement is always good for the back. Your goal is to reduce the movements that make them uncomfortable and make the pain worse.

Help them in the rehabilitation program.

This is a great way to show them that you are with them and will go to any lengths to make sure that they overcome their minor problem. This also has another advantage as it will keep their spirits high and would also give extra efforts to get fit again.

  • Become a rehab friend. The best way to do this is to join them in the rehabilitation program. This is a great way to show empathy by doing the meditation or the exercises with them. This will help them to get rid of all the ergonomic pains.
  • Try out a reminder system. It is very important to take every medicine at the right time. If you have a weak memory then try to use an alarm system on the phone or on the watch to make sure that they are taking the medicines at the right time.
